Racers Place Fifth At NCAA Championships

The Murray State rifle team placed fifth at the 27th annual NCAA Rifle Championships, held at the U.S. Olympic Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.
The Racers finished in fifth in both smallbore and air rifle, scoring a 2310 out of a possible 2400 in smallbore and a 2311 out of a possible 2400 in air rifle for an aggregate (combined) score of 4621.
Alaska-Fairbanks won its seventh NCAA rifle title with an aggregate score of 4682 out of a possible 4800. Nebraska was second at 4666, followed by Army at 4650, Navy at 4625, Murray State at 4621, Mississippi at 4616, Kentucky at 4600. Jacksonville State ? which qualified in smallbore only but won the national team title ?had a score of 2339, while Nevada ? which qualified in air rifle only ? had a score of 2326.
For Murray State, sophomore Cameron Hicks tied for fifth in smallbore with a score of 585 out of a possible 600. He also had a 579 out of a possible 600 in air rifle for an aggregate of 1164 out of a possible 1200.
Freshman Bryant Wallizer fired a 576 in smallbore and a 581 in air rifle for an aggregate of 1157, while junior Josiah Brooks fired a 575 in smallbore and a 570 in air rifle for an aggregate of 1145. Senior Alex Culbertson shot a 581 in air rifle, while sophomore Dan Belluzzo fired a 574 in smallbore.
Kristina Fehlings of Nebraska had the best individual air rifle score at 592, while Jamie Beyerle of Alaska-Fairbanks had the highest smallbore score at 593.
Murray State took part in its 26th NCAA Championships, participating in every Championships since the NCAA began sponsoring them in 1980 except for the 2005 season. The Racers won the NCAA titles in 1985 and 1987.
