Murray State Men's Tennis Edged By Memphis

Jeff Lester extended his winning streak to four but the Murray State University men's tennis team fell to the University of Memphis, 4-3, today at the UM Recreation Courts in Memphis, Tenn. After winning three straight matches at number five singles, Lester returned to his sixth spot and extended his streak with a 7-5 and 7-6 victory over Vinicius Craveiro. The Racers fall to 2-6 on the season while the Tigers end a three match losing streak and improve to 4-9 in 2006.

Memphis grabbed the early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches. Hunter Gerlach and Jeff Lester earned the lone doubles victory for MSU by beating Tezar Putra and Matt Brewer at number two doubles, 8-7 (4). UM's Sam Withell and James Spence edged Fadi Zamjaoui and Dmytro Hryhorash at number one doubles, 8-6.

In singles play, Murray State earned wins at the top of the line-up and at the bottom but lost three matches in the middle. Zamjaoui defeated Spence at number one singles in three sets. After dropping the first set 6-1, Zamjaoui came back to win the second and third set by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.

Hryhorash picked up a win for the Racers at number two singles by beating Michael Jetter 6-3 and 6-4.

Memphis beat MSU at number three, four and five singles. Garrison Pilant lost just two games on his way to a 6-1 and 6-1 victory over Yuri Pompeu at number five singles.

Next up for the Racers is a match against Harding University on Monday in Searcy, Ark. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
