Practice 4-MSU Spring Football
4/1/2006 6:00:00 AM | Football
The Murray State Racer football team scrimmaged today for about an hour, running approximately 40-50 plays in the hot weather. Six referees were on hand to enforce penalties, and the players played for four “quarters”, pausing in between each quarter for a water break.
The first “score” of the day came on a long pass from Chris Hirschfield to Lee McGinnis. This score was set up by a 20-yard rush by senior tailback Chad Cook.
Quarterback Ryne Salyer connected with McGinnis for a 35-yard pass later on in the scrimmage, and later hooked up with DeAngelo Nelson for a 10-yard slant. Several players took turns carrying the ball, including Cook, Dante Woods, Nate Moore, and Darius Leak.
On defense, safety Koji Farrington had broke up several passes and made a great open-field tackle on a swing-out halfback pass. Seth Warren and Nathan Williams also recorded one sack each for the defense, while Danny Blakemore and Jared Swanson also made key open-field tackles.
The scrimmage ended with kicker Gary Crass making both of his PAT attempts.
NOTES: One player who has been impressive in spring practice has been walk-on wide receiver Gabe Barrett. Barrett, from Winchester, Ky., has made several catches the past few days, including a nice diving catch from Salyer during Friday's practice.
Quinton Hankins looked impressive blocking on the offensive line today, drawing praise from assistant coach Michael Hayes. Hankins played sparingly last season as a true freshman, but will be counted on this season to be a piece of the remade Racer offensive line.
During the break before the fourth quarter, defensive coordinator Rich Nagy encouraged the defense to have fun, and show everyone how much they love the game. Head coach Matt Griffin echoed these comments after the scrimmage was over, telling the team to pride themselves, pride the facilities, enjoy the beautiful campus of Murray State, and be proud to be a Racer.
The Racers' next practice is scheduled for Tuesday, April 4 at 4 p.m. All public are invited to attend, and admission is free.
