Women's Tennis Edged By Tennessee Tech

Margot Carter held off Casady Pruitt at number three singles in three sets to give Tennessee Tech University a 4-3 win over the Murray State University women's tennis team today in Cookeville, Tenn. The two teams played five three-set singles matches with the Golden Eagles winning three. Murray State ends its regular season with a 12-9 overall record and an 8-2 Ohio Valley Conference mark. Tech improves to 8-7 on the season and 6-1 in league play.
Tennessee Tech jumped out to the early lead by winning two of the three doubles matches to claim the doubles point. Anne Pennington and Pruitt defeated Carter and Kay Ngiam, 8-4, at number two doubles for the Racers lone win.
MSU won three of the first five singles matches to force a 3-3 tie. Anna Lask, this week's OVC women's tennis Athlete of the Week, beat Alet Boonzaaier in three sets, 6-4, 1-6 and 6-2, at number one singles. Rachael Lask also held off a comeback at number two singles, beating Marina Tasheva 6-4, 1-6 and 6-3. Tami McQueen came through for the Racers at number six singles, posting the only straight set victory by either team with a 6-1 and 6-1 victory over Maia Semerdjieva.
The Golden Eagles picked up wins at number four and five singles to set up the number three singles match between Pruitt and Carter as the “winner-take-all” match. Carter won the first set 6-2 but Pruitt came back with a 6-4 win in set number two. In the decisive third set Carter held on for a 7-5 win to give TTU the team win.
The Racers have concluded the regular season portion of their 2006 schedule. Next up is the OVC Tournament, which runs April 21 to 23 in Nashville, Tenn.
