The bats that the Murray State Thoroughbreds flashed at Eastern Kentucky last weekend went silent in Evansville tonight, as the host Purple Aces held the 'Breds to three hits en route to the 10-0 MSU loss.
Designated hitter Chaz Ebert saw a 12-game hit streak -- the longest on the team thus far this season -- end tonight, going 0-for-3, and Brett Wilson snapped a 14-game on-base streak.
MSU third baseman and Evansville native Tyler Owen got the first hit for the 'Breds, a single in the fifth inning. Pinch-hitter Kalen Gibson hit a bloop single in the ninth, followed by a single by James Akin. Murray State batters only struck out five times, but couldn't find any gaps when they made contact.
West Harris (0-3) took the loss for the 'Breds, allowing thre runs (two earned) on five hits, striking out two and walking none in four innings. Daniel Calhoun came on in the fifth, allowing one run on two hits, striking out one and walking one in one inning. Michal Perconte pitched the sixth inning, allowing one run on two hits and striking out one, while Marc Harmon pitched the seventh inning, allowing one run on one hit. Anthony Stacy pitched the eighth inning, allowing four runs on four hits.
Scott Souther (3-1), the first of six Purple Aces pitchers, got the win, allowing no runs on no hits, striking out one and walking one in three innings.
Murray State (10-27) returns to Ohio Valley Conference action this weekend, hosting Morehead State. The three-game series begins with a Saturday double-header at 1 p.m., followed by a Sunday 1 p.m. game. All three games can be heard locally on WRKY (1130 AM) or worldwide through the official Web site for Murray State athletics, www.GoRacers.com.
