Women's Tennis Advances To OVC Semifinals With 4-2 Win Over Jacksonville State

Murray State University's women's tennis team beat Jacksonville State University, 4-2, today in the first round of the 2006 O'Reilly Ohio Valley Conference Tennis Championship Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. The match was played indoors at the Vanderbilt Tennis Complex. The third seeded Racers will face No. 2 seed Samford University on Saturday at 2 p.m., at the Centennial Sportsplex.

MSU improves to 13-9 on the season while Jacksonville State, the tournament's No. 6 seed, finishes its season with a 5-17 record.

The Racers took an early advantage by claiming the doubles point. Anna Lask and Rachael Lask, two members of the 2006 All-OVC First Team, beat Michelle Dushner and Erin Higgs at No.1 doubles 8-1. Casady Pruitt and Anne Pennington beat Eloah Lopes and Layla Abby, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.

Jacksonville State took the No. 3 doubles match when Marcia Barnes and Babette Lombardo beat Tami McQueen and Adriana Alvarez 8-3.

In singles play Murray State controlled the top half of the line-up to take the match. Anna Lask lost just three games at No. 1 singles on her way to a 6-2 and 6-1 win over Dushner. Rachael Lask beat Higgs, 6-4 and 6-4, at No. 2 singles. Pruitt took out Lopes at No. 3 singles.

The Gamecocks earned points at No. 4 and No. 5 singles. Lombardo beat Pennington in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4 at No. 4 singles. Abby lost just three games at No. 5 singles in dispatching Alvarez 6-2 and 6-1.

The No. 6 singles match between McQueen and Borda was suspended after Murray State clinched the victory.
