Women's Tennis Edges Samford 4-3

Murray State University's women's tennis team beat Samford University, 4-3, today at KenLake State Resort Park in Aurora, Ky. The Racers improve to 10-8 overall and 6-1 in the Ohio Valley Conference. The Bulldogs drop to 10-5 on the season and 6-2 in league matches.

In doubles, Christie Baker and Whitnie Warren gave Samford the early edge when they defeated Adriana Alvarez and Tami McQueen, 8-3, at number three doubles. The Racers came back and won the next two doubles matches to claim the doubles point and a 1-0 lead.

Anna Lask and Rachael Lask lost just two games on their way to a win at number one doubles over Emily White and Sarah McKey. Casady Pruitt and Anne Pennington clinched the doubles point for MSU with an 8-6 victory at number two doubles over Anna Jackson and Katie McMiller.

Anna Lask made it a 2-0 Murray State lead when she dispatched Jackson at number one singles in straight sets without losing a single game, 6-0 and 6-0. Pennington's win at number four singles brought the Racers to within a point of claiming the team victory. Pennington downed Warren 6-2 and 6-4.

White cut the Bulldog deficit to 3-1 with a win over Casady Pruitt at number three singles. Rachael Lask however clinched the match for Murray State with a 6-2 and 6-3 victory at number two singles over McMiller.

Samford's McKey and Bethany Benson earned wins at number five and six singles to set the final score at 4-3.

The Racers will conclude the home portion of their 2006 schedule on Saturday with an OVC match against Jacksonville State University. The match is scheduled to be held at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts on the MSU campus beginning at 10 a.m.
