Volleyball Opens OVC Schedule

The Murray State women's volleyball team faces its first league test this weekend at Eastern Illinois and at Southeast Missouri. At 8-2, the Racers are off to their best 10-match start in school history.
Murray State opens Ohio Valley Conference play on Friday at 7 p.m. at Eastern Illinois (5-6, 0-0 OVC). The Racers then visit Southeast Missouri State (5-7, 0-0 OVC) on Saturday at 2 p.m.
MSU begins its quest for the OVC title as the nation's toughest defensive team, averaging 21.03 digs per game. The Racers also rank first in the OVC in solo blocks (1.35 per game), attacks (43.14 per game), fewest attack errors (5.16 per game) and most opponent attack errors (7.54 per game).
Murray State ranks third in attack percentage (.209) and second in lowest opponent attack percentage (.170). The Racers' staunch defense has them ranked second in the conference in digs per opponent attack (.452).
Individually, sophomore libero Heather Norris leads the conference with 5.39 digs per game. Freshman setter Cassie Chesney is second with 11.89 assists per game, while sophomore outside hitter Alison Mugler is ninth with 3.89 digs per game.
Senior middle blocker Katie Kemezys is third with an attack percentage of .340, eighth with 3.09 kills per game and ninth with 0.97 blocks per game. Senior middle blocker Holly Jansen is ninth with 3.08 kills per game and 10th with 3.66 points per game. Sophomore Alyssa Groves is 10th with 0.39 aces per game and 10th with 3.86 digs per game.
