Sophomore libero Heather Norris was unanimously chosen Ohio Valley Conference Defensive Volleyball Player of the Week by balloting taken by the league's volleyball sports information contacts.
Norris notched a career- and conference season-high 39 digs at Eastern Illinois in bolstering the Racers to a 3-1 win there on Friday, then repelled 18 digs at Southeast Missouri State in helping MSU pick up its first win in Cape Girardeau since 1997. The 5-3 native of Naperville, Ill., averaged 7.13 digs per game, 1.05 digs per game more than the next-highest candidate for the honor this week. The honor is her second of the season.
Murray State (10-2, 2-0 OVC) ranked first in the nation last week with 21.03 digs per game after ranking third in Division I the week before. The NCAA statistical rankings are released every Tuesday.
The Racers conclude its season-opening 14-match road swing this weekend, with a match at Austin Peay on Friday at 7 p.m. and a contest at defending OVC co-champion Tennessee State on Saturday at 2 p.m. Murray State has won nine of its last 10 matches, and is off to the best start in its 24-year volleyball history.
