Volleyball Shares OVC Lead With Ninth Straight League Win

After playing on fire in the exciting Game 4 against Morehead State last night, junior outside hitter Alyssa Groves picked up where she left off in Murray State's volleyball match against Ohio Valley Conference rival Eastern Kentucky on Saturday, slamming a match-high 15 kills with only one error in 46 attacks for an attack percentage of .304 to lead the Racers past the Colonels 3-0 in Racer Arena. Game scores were 30-23, 30-24, 30-26.
Murray State (12-9, 9-2 OVC) won their ninth straight OVC match and moved into a tie for first place with idle Tennessee State and Jacksonville State, which lost to Southeast Missouri State this afternoon. The Racers' next match is at Jacksonville State on Friday.
Senior middle hitter Tara DeMage landed 10 kills for the Racers and had 17 digs for the match's only double-double, her 13th.
Sophomore setter Cassie Chesney handed out a match-high 43 assists, while she and junior outside hitter Alison Mugler each served up two aces. DeMage had a match-high three blocks, while freshman middle hitter Sara Hayden had two.
Junior libero Heather Norris repelled 22 digs to lead the Racers and move into a tie for third place on the MSU career digs list, equaling Hall of Famer Jill Doty with 1,599 career digs.
Eastern Kentucky (2-19, 1-10 OVC) was led by Bridget Mustard's 14 kills, hitting .345 with four errors in 29 attacks. Amanda Wilson added 13 kills, hitting .407 with two errors in 27 attacks. Amanda Fago served up a match-high five aces, while Mustard had a team-high two blocks. Brittany Nobilio had a match-high 26 digs, while Kate Hendle had 20, Abbey Blank had 13 and Fago had 11.
Murray State will take its annual trip to Alabama next weekend, taking on Jacksonville State on Friday at 7 p.m. The Racers will then visit Samford on Saturday at 6 p.m.
