Doubles Teams Shine as Women?s Tennis Has Strong Outing at Memphis

The doubles tandems of Angela McGahee and Anne Pennington, and Alexis Webb and Lyndsay Ottosen swept their way to the championship match of the Division I doubles bracket at the Memphis Lady Tiger Invitational. They shared the championship as they did not play the match due to being teammates.
McGahee and Pennington began the weekend with an easy 8-2 victory over a duo from Western Kentucky before defeating Cruise/Se' of Southern Illinois 8-6. In the semis, the duo quickly disposed of Weijenborg/Van Den Houte of Arkansas-Little Rock, 8-2.
Webb and Ottosen had an easier route to the championship match as they won their opening match, 8-0, over Fulkerson/True of WKU before receiving a bye into the semifinals. The duo returned to the court on Saturday morning and defeated Quist/Thomson of Ball State, 8-5, to advance to the finals.
In the Division II doubles, Ashley Pierson and Adriana Alvarez overcame a second round loss to capture the consolation championship. The teammates defeated Caplinger/Oberle of WKU, 8-0, in the semis before handing Tallefer/Tilton of SIU an 8-4 defeat to capture the championship.
In singles action, freshman Pierson advanced to the championship match of Division III singles as she received a first-round bye before defeating Leanne Caplinger of WKU, 6-2, 6-2 in the quarterfinals. Pierson advanced to the finals with a 7-6 (5), 6-3 victory in the semis before falling 6-1, 4-6, 10-4 to Jennifer Pollack of BSU in the finals.
Alvarez brought home a singles championship as she played her way through the consolation bracket of Division III singles to capture the title. Alvarez did not drop a game in the quarterfinals and marched into the finals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Carolina Pachon of Tennessee Tech. Alvarez capped off the championship with 2-6, 7-6, 10-6 victory over SIU's Amanda Tallefer.
Freshman Katelyn Fulcher played her way into a championship as she advanced to the Division IV finals with a 6-4, 6-2 victory in the semis before handing Francis Trigg of WKU a 6-7, 6-3, 10-8 defeat to capture the title.
Webb advanced to the consolation finals in Division II singles, Webb overcame a first-round loss to defeat Claire Landry of Lipscomb, 6-1, 4-6, 10-2, before defeating Brittany Waiz of WKU, 6-4, 6-1. Webb's tournament came to an end with a tough 7-5, 0-6, 9-11 loss to Anne Weijenborg of UALR in the championship match.
The women's tennis team opens the spring season on Feb. 8 as they travel to take on Western Kentucky.
