The Murray State volleyball team earned the No. 5 seed in the six-team Ohio Valley Conference Championship Tournament, to be played Thursday through Saturday in Jacksonville, Ala. Match times have not yet been released.
The Racers (16-4, 13-7 OVC) will face No. 4 seed Tennessee State (17-13, 14-6 OVC) on Thursday. In the other quarterfinal match, No. 3 Southeast Missouri (20-11, 15-5 OVC) will take on No. 6 Tennessee Tech (17-14, 11-9 OVC). Top seed and tournament host Jacksonville State (18-9, 15-5 OVC) will play its first match of the tournament on Friday against the winner of the Murray State/Tennessee Tech match, while No. 2 Morehead State (21-11, 15-5 OVC) will take on the SEMO/Tech winner on Friday. The championship match will be played on Saturday between the two Friday winners. The tournament champion earns an automatic bid into the NCAA Volleyball Championship.
For the first time ever, three teams tied for first place at the end of the regular season. Jacksonville State, Morehead State and Southeast Missouri all tied for first place at 15-5 in league play. The final entry into the tournament was also decided today, as Tennessee Tech clinched the sixth seed with its win at Murray State today.
All of the tournament matches will be video-streamed through www.OVCsports.tv.
"This is going to be a crazy tournament," said Racer head coach David Schwepker. "Any team in it has the chance to win. Last year, the No. 6 seed, Southeast Missouri, advanced all the way to the championship match. I think that is very likely this year (for a low seed to go deep) -- maybe even win the tournament. It will all depend on who is 'on' throughout the tournament, who will be up for two or three matches."
"This is a tribute to our conference," said Tennessee Tech head coach John Blair. "It came down to the last day of play before the top seed and the No. 6 seed were determined."
