
Women's Basketball Wins Fifth Straight

The Murray State women's basketball team led from the start and Ashley Hayes notched her sixth double-double in seven games in the Racers' 83-71 win at Lipscomb. The win was the fifth straight for MSU.
The Racers (7-2) scored the first 10 points of the game on two jumpers and a three-pointer from junior guard Amber Guffey and a trey from junior guard/forward Ashley Hayes. Murray State took a 45-34 lead at halftime, hitting 55.9 percent of its shots from the field, holding the Lady Bisons (2-8) to 34.4-percent shooting in the half.
MSU outscored Lipscomb 38-37 in the second half and finished hitting 54.1 percent from the field, making 10 of its 20 shots from behind the arc. Guffey missed a free-throw attempt in the first half, cutting the Racers' streak at 16 made.
Guffey finished with a game-high 23 points on 8-for-17 shooting from the field, and handed out four assists. Hayes had 19 points, shooting 9-for-17 from the field, and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds, with 10 of those coming on the defensive end. Junior guard Paige Guffey popped in 16 points, hitting four of her six three-point attempts, going 4-for-5 behind the arc in the first half. Senior guard Shaleea Petty put in 14 points on 6-for-8 shooting, grabbing six rebounds and handing out a game-high five assists.Senior center Angela Brown had a game-high two blocked shots, and Hayes, Petty and senior guard Gerraca Matthews swiped a game-high two steals each.
Lipscomb was paced by Katie Rollins, who had 18 points and a team-high six rebounds.Valerie Bronson added 15 points off the bench, and she and Jilian Partin each had five rebounds. Miaca Bowman and Catie Woods each had a team-high three assists for the Lady Bisons.
Murray State returns to Ohio Valley Conference action this week, visiting Jacksonville State on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. and Samford on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
