Murray State rifle coach Morgan Hicks placed 10th at the Pan American Games qualifier at Fort Benning, Ga. Pending formal approval by the U.S. Olympic Committee, Amanda Furrer and Jamie Beyerle will represent the United States at the 2007 Pan American Games at Rio de Janiero, Brazil.
Hicks scored an 1802.3 in the competition, firing a 1706 out of a possible 1800 of the three days, shooting a 570 out of a possible 600 on Monday, a 560 on Tuesday and a 576 on Wednesday. Hicks took part in the final round on Wednesday adding 96.3 points to her total. Furrer shot a total score of 1938, while Beyerle fired a 1934.2.
Hicks was seeking her first entry into the Pan American Games, the one international competition to elude her. The last time the Pan American qualifier was held, in 2003, Hicks chose not to compete and prepare for her final collegiate year at Murray State.
A 2004 graduate of MSU, Hicks has taken part in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, as well as several World Cup and Junior Olympic competitions. Hicks was the 2004 NCAA air rifle champion and an eight-time All-American as a shooter for Murray State.
