Women's Tennis Beats Eastern Kentucky 5-2

Murray State's women's tennis team improved its Ohio Valley Conference record to 4-1 with a 5-2 win over Eastern Kentucky University today at the Bennie Purcell Tennis Courts on the MSU campus.

The Racers improve to 9-5 overall in 2007. EKU drops to 10-10 on the season and 4-3 against league opponents.

In doubles play, Angela McGahee and Lynsey Bochenek quickly dispatched Page Ashby and Casie Phillips at No. 3 doubles, 8-0, to give the Racers an early advantage. Soon after, Anna Lask and Rachael Lask clinched the doubles point for Murray State with an 8-3 victory over Svetlana Pimenova and Alexandra Sitnikova at No. 1 doubles.

Anna Lask's shot that wrapped around the post and hit right inside the line put the MSU duo ahead 6-2.

Jemma Euers and Lucia Vojtkova edged Murray State's Casady Pruitt and Lyndsay Ottosen, 8-6, at No. 2 doubles.

Euers evened up the match score at 1-1 when she downed McGahee at No. 4 singles, 6-4 and 6-3.

Murray State went back up in front 3-1 with wins from Anna Lask and Pruitt. Lask beat Pimenova, 6-4 and 6-4, at No. 1 singles. Pruitt won over Sitnikova, 6-4 and 7-5, at No. 3 singles.

Vojtkova's win over Rachael Lask, 7-6 and 6-3, at No. 2 singles cut the EKU deficit to 3-2, but a pair of freshmen closed the door on the Colonels.

Ottosen clinched the match for the Racers with a shutout at No. 6 singles over Ashby. Bochenek set the final score with a three set win over Phillips at No. 5 singles. Bochenek dropped the first set 7-6 but came back with a 6-1 win in the second set and took the third by a 10-8 score.

The Racers will be back in action on Saturday morning when they host Morehead State University at 10 a.m., at KenLake State Resort Park. Senior day activities will begin at 9:30 a.m.
