Murray State rifle coach Morgan Hicks has accepted the position of rifle head coach at the University of Nebraska, effective July 1.
Hicks, a 2004 graduate of MSU and a four-year Racer shooter, was the head coach at Murray State last season and served as an assistant coach for the two previous seasons, earning her master's degree from MSU in 2006. She was also a coach with the civilian marksmanship program.
Hicks competed in the 2004 Olympics in Athens, Greece, and hopes to compete in the 2008 Games in Beijing, China. She also competed in World Cups in Milan, Italy (2004, 2006) and Munich, Germany (2006) and in the World Championships in Zagreb, Yugoslavia (2006). She was a four-time competitor in the Junior Olympics (1998-2001), winning the 2001 smallbore championship.
As a collegiate shooter, she was an eight-time All-American, earning honors in smallbore and air rifle in all four of her seasons. She was also the 2004 NCAA air rifle champion.
"I am so excited about getting this opportunity," she said. "Words can't describe how grateful I am to Murray State for the opportunities given to me as a student-athlete and as a coach. I am also grateful to Nebraska for giving me this opportunity to further my career at such a noted university with such a well-developed program."
"Morgan Hicks will be a great addition to our Nebraska staff," said UN athletics director Steve Pederson. "She has accomplished a great deal in a relatively short coaching career, and she has an impressive resume as a rifle competitor on both the collegiate and international level. Her combination of energy and expertise will provide our rifle program with outstanding direction."
"We will certainly miss Morgan, and we wish her all the best," said MSU athletics director Allen Ward. "She was an outstanding coach and an outstanding student-athlete at Murray State. She guided our program well and continued to bring success through appearances in the NCAA Championships. We wish her the best at Nebraska."
