Volleyball Gets Fourth Straight Win

The Murray State volleyball team faced a tenacious Austin Peay defense this afternoon in Clarksville, Tenn., but came away with a 3-2 win, marking the Racers' fourth straight win, with all four wins coming on the road against Ohio Valley Conference competition. Game scores from today were 30-20, 29-31, 30-27, 21-30, 15-9.
Murray State (7-8, 4-2 OVC) hit .322 for the match, making only 18 errors in 99 attacks. Freshman middle hitter Sara Hayden hit .486, with 19 kills and one error in 37 attacks; freshman outside hitter Becca Lamb hit .370, with 21 kills and four errors in 46 attacks; junior outside hitter Alison Mugler hit .295, with 17 kills and four errors in 44 attacks; and senior middle hitter Tarra DeMage hit .270, with 14 kills and four errors in 37 attcaks. Sophomore Cassie Chesney had four kills and no errors in eight attacks, hitting .500.
DeMage served up three aces, and she and Lamb had a team-high three blocks each. On defense, junior libero Heather Norris had a match-high 23 digs, while DeMage had 19 digs, Mugler had 18 and junior outside hitter Alyssa Groves had 15.
For Austin Peay (7-11, 2-4 OVC), Dodi Szymska had 25 kills and hit .344, with three errors in 64 attacks. Jessica Mollman had 18 kills, while Kirstin Distler had 14. Leanne Kreps hit .368, with eight kills and one error in 19 attacks. Sarah Alisaleh handed out 67 assists, while Taylor Skinner served up four aces. On defense, Kristen Kirch had 241 digs, while Distler had 17, Alisaleh had 15, Szymska had 14 and Caroline Frens had 10. Mollman had a match-high four blocks for APSU.
"Austin Peay was very strong," said MSU head coach David Schwepker. "They were prepared for us, and their defense was very good."
Murray State returns home after sweeping its four-match road swing, hosting Southeast Missouri State on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Racer Arena.
