Women's Tennis Competes At Saint Louis

The Murray State women's tennis team took part in the three-team Billiken Fall Classic this weekend, competing against Illinois State and host Saint Louis. The event featured three flighted singles brackets and two flighted doubles brackets. The teams played indoors due to inclement weather.

Freshman Ashley Pierson won the backdraw of her singles bracket, going 2-1 overall. All three of her matches were determined by tie-breaker games.

"It's really kind of early in the season for us," said MSU head coach Connie Keasling. "We were able to get in some good, quality play. Both Illinois State and Saint Louis are stronger than any teams we'll face in conference play this year. I thought we played the big points really well."

Murray State was 4-2 in tie-breaking games.

For the first time in five years, Keasling doesn't have the doubles tandem of Anna and Rachael Lask in her lineup, and was able to work in four combinations in the tournament.

"We tried some different combinations at doubles," Keasling said. "Our players got together and worked together and really played well together all weekend. They were really excited about starting the season; they've been working all summer for this. I think this tournament helped us grow as players and grow together as a team."

The Racers opened 2007-08 play at the three-team event. MSU will next compete at the UALR Tournament on Sept. 21-24 at Little Rock, Ark.
