Volleyball Signs Two For 2009

Head Murray State Volleyball Coach David Schwepker announced the signing of two players for the 2009 campaign. Lydia Orf and Wendi Zickfield will be heading to Murray from the State of Missouri.

“I am very excited and pleased with our recruiting class for the Fall of 2009,” said Schwepker. “I believe they will add to and help our program for years to come.”

2009 Signing Class:

Lydia Orf, L, 5-6, Incarnate Word Academy (St. Louis CYC)

Wendi Zickfield, MB/OH, 6-1, Cape Girardeau, Mo. (Mineral Arena Magic)

Lydia Orf has been an important part of the Incarnate Word volleyball squad for the past two seasons. As a junior she was both an offensive and defensive threat for the Red Knights, finishing second on the team in kills and digs. She earned All-District First Team honors which helped Incarnate Word to a fourth-place finish at the Missouri State Championships. As a senior she moved to the libero position and was the only libero in the State of Missouri to earn All-State First Team honors. The Red Knights finished the season 30-9-1 and took third-place at the state championships. Besides her All-State honors, Orf was named to the All-District and All-Region First Teams.

“Our volleyball program is well known in the Ohio Valley Conference and the country for its outstanding defense and once again I believe I have recruited another outstanding defensive player in Lydia Orf,” Schwepker said. “Lydia is extremely quick and has the instincts to know where the ball is going to go and is not afraid to sacrifice her body to get it. I will not recruit a libero unless she is an excellent passer and that is one of the main reasons I wanted Lydia to come play for us. It doesn't matter how many great hitters or great setters we have if we can not get that first pass to them. Lydia can do the job.”

Orf is also an excellent student. She is a member of the National Honor Society and has a 3.95 GPA at her college prep high school in St. Louis, Mo.

Wendi Zickfield is an outstanding two-sport athlete at Cape Central High School in Cape Girardeau, Mo. Zickfield was a four-year starter for the volleyball squad and a three-year starter for the basketball team. She earned three-straight First Team All-Conference Honors and a Second Team All-Conference honor her first season. Zickfield recorded 172 kills, 158 digs, and 25 blocks as senior after setting a school record for kills (280) and service aces (67) as a junior. In her final two seasons with the Tigers she was an All-State Honorable Mention, while being named to the All-Southeast Missourian Team as a junior.

” Wendi is an extremely coachable athlete with a high ceiling for volleyball,” said Schwepker. “Wendi is also a standout basketball player and I am just excited that she chose volleyball over basketball. I know she has not even come close to her potential in this sport and that is what makes coaching fun for me. I love taking in athletes that have a lot to learn, especially when they are willing to take on the challenges that a Division I volleyball program offers. I believe Wendi is up for the challenge and is going to be a great asset to the Murray State Volleyball program.”

On the basketball court Zickfield has led the Tigers in scoring and rebounding in her first three seasons, while earning All-District and All-Region First Team honors. For the past two years she has been named to the All-Southeast Missourian First-Team and was named the 2008 Southeast Missourian Player of the Year.
