Setter Jade Guo earned one of the top four honors given out by the Ohio Valley Conference for the 2008 volleyball campaign, as she was named the 2008 Freshman of the Year. Guo was also one of three
“It is a great honor for Jade to earn this award,” said head coach David Schwepker. “I am very proud of her. She has worked hard all season and it shows on the court.”
The Freshman of the Year award is the second for MSU volleyball, and the first player of the year honor since 2006 when Heather Norris was named Defensive Player of the Year. Su was also the second Racer to earn All-OVC Second Team honors. This is the first time in school history that the Racers have had three players named to the All-Newcomer team in the same season.
Guo finished the regular season averaging 10.42 assists per set against league opponents, good for the No. 2 spot on the OVC charts this season. The DaTong, China, native is third on the team with her .240 (108k-34e-308) hitting percentage and 10 service aces during the conference season. She also adds 167 digs and 39 (6-33) total blocks. Guo was named the OVC Setter of the Week the last three weeks of the regular season, helping the Racers to six-straight wins. Her overall average of 9.31 assists per set has her ranked 136th in the national charts in matches through Nov. 16.
Su was honored after leading MSU with 3.12 kills per set and recording the second-highest attack percentage on the team when facing OVC opponents. The A La Shan Zuo Qui, Inner Mongolia, China, native also has a season-best 11 service aces and has added 27 (9-18) blocks.
The Louisville, Ky., native has been named the OVC Defensive Player of the Week for the past three weeks. She averaged 5.25 digs per set, the third-best average in the conference. Sauer also tallied nine service aces against league opponents this season. Her 4.37 digs per set overall this year has her currently ranked in the No. 78 spot on the national dig charts.
“I am proud of Kayleah and Logan for earning their OVC honors as well,” Schwepker added. “For how we started the beginning of the season it was great to see them help the team turn things around. Individually all three kept improving all season and that shows the type of character they have as student-athletes.”
The No. 3 Racers will head to Cookeville, Tenn., for a 5 p.m. battle with No. 6 UT Martin in the quarterfinals of the 2008 OVC Volleyball Championship.
