The Racers made 19-of-20 free throws in the final seven minutes and got a big jump shot from Isacc Miles with 45 seconds left to push their mark to 3-1 and drop the Sycamores to 0-3.
The Racers started the half with a 7-5 lead after a basket by Danero Thomas only 2:43 into the contest, but fell behind by eight at 24-16 with 10:30 left.
MSU still trailed 27-19 with 8:00 left when they put together a run.
Ivan Aska and Jewuan Long hit shots, before Tony Easley made it a 27-26 game on a tip in with 3:31 left.
The half ended with Danero Thomas scoring on a break and hitting a fall away jumper at the 1:16 mark to make it a 32-30 in favor of the Sycamores.
The Racers survived the half even with ISU hitting 9-of-14 from three-point range.
Danero Thomas provided some punch in the half hitting for 15 points.
He stayed hot and tied the game at 37-37 with his fourth three-pointer of the game at the 15:58 mark of the second half.
The Racers' defense was on in the second in holding ISU with no field goals until 14:12 left when Rashad Reed scored. Monents later Keenan Barlow hit a three and the Racer lead was down to one.
Danero Thomas hit a mid-range jumper with 12:15 left and the Racers were again ahead by five at 47-42.
The Racers led by eight again after two Long free throws with 6:17 left.
ISU made a charge when MSU suffered back to back turnovers and Jay Tunell hit two free throws and then a three-pointer to cut the MSU lead to 58-56 with 4:00 left.
The MSU lead was down to two points at 61-59 with 1:18 remaining when the Racers pulled out a tough road victory.
Isacc Miles hit a free throw line jumper with under five second left on the shot clock to put MSU ahead 63-59 with 45 seconds left.
Jeffery McClain and Tyler Holloway each made a pair of free throws in the final seconds to seal the 67-61 victory for the Racers.
The Racers nailed down the win even in the face of making no field goals after Holloway's three-pointer with 11:19 left until Miles made his shot with 45 seconds on the clock.
MSU made 19 of 20 from the free throw line in the final seven minutes of the contest.
Danero Thomas led the way for the Racers as their only player in double-figures with a career-high 22 points.
The Racers won the battle of the boards 38-27 and pulled down 13 offensive rebounds.
