Rifle Finishes A Close Second At NCAA Sectional

The Murray State rifle team finished a close second in the NCAA sectional, held today at Jacksonville, Ala. The Racers had a tournament-best 2279 out of a possible 2400 in smallbore, but trailed host Jacksonville State by 12 points in the air rifle competition for the difference.
Murray State was second in the three-team competition with an aggregate (air rifle and smallbore score combined) of 4594 out of a possible 4800. Jacksonville State finished in first with an aggregate of 4596, while Tennessee Tech was third at 4552.
Kasey Meyer had the top individual score in air rifle, firing a 587 out of a possible 600 to best JSU's Michael Dickinson by one point. Dan Belluzzo and Kevin Witbrodt tied for third at 582, while Harley Jette had a 568.
In smallbore, Witbrodt had a competition-best 577 out of a possible 600, followed by Cameron Hicks, who tied for second at 575. Erica Meece had a 571, while Meyer had a 567.
The field for the 2008 NCAA Championships will be announced in the next week. The Championships will be held March 14-15 at West Point, N.Y. The top seven teams will advance based a formula that is comprised 50 percent on today's results and 50 percent on a average of the team's top three regular season scores. Murray State has participated in all but one NCAA Championships since their inception in 1980.
