
Jacksonville State Pulls Out 2-1 Pitchers Dual

A Murray State throwing error in the bottom of the fifth inning led to an unearned run as Jacksonville State came away with a 2-1 victory in a classic pitchers dual in the second game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Rudy Abbott Field.
JSU (9-11, 2-0 OVC) got on the board in the second inning as Clay Whittemore's line drive to right field got past the right fielder for a leadoff triple. Andrew Edge followed with an RBI single to right field.
The ?Breds (6-8, 0-2 OVC) got the equalizer in the fifth as Taylor Thieke battled at the plate before lacing a single to center field on the 10th pitch of the at-bat. Tyler Owen followed with an infield single off the leg of the pitcher and Matt Hon advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt. Evan Pettit drove in the runner from third with a single to right center.
JSU got the run right back in the bottom of the inning as a one-out throwing error by the ?Breds led to an unearned run. With two on and two outs, leadoff hitter Bert Smith singled to right center to drive in the go-ahead run.
Ben Tootle (3-2) was the beneficiary of the unearned run as he picked up the victory by allowing one run on five hits and fanning 10 over 6.1 innings. Alex Jones (4) picked up the save as he retired both batters he faced.
Daniel Calhoun (1-1) was the tough-luck loser as he gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits and eight punchouts over six innings.
The two teams will close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
