Alan Lollar Named MSU Rifle Head Coach

Alan Lollar has been named the Head Coach of Murray State Rifle program, after serving one year as the interim coach.

“Alan has done an excellent job as interim coach and I'm pleased he is willing to continue on a permanent basis,” said MSU Athletics Director Allen Ward. “I'm confident the program will sustain its championship tradition under Alan's leadership.”

Since returning to Murray State in 1992, I have enjoyed the opportunity to work with MSU Rifle and cannot say enough about the opportunity Allen Ward has presented to me.” Lollar said. “MSU Rifle has a proud tradition of excellence and I am honored to get the chance to be a part of its future. I want to thank Mr. Ward for his confidence and support.”

Lollar has shown his abilities to lead the MSU Rifle program in his first season and was named the Ohio Valley Conference Coach of the Year. Two MSU Rifle student-athletes, Cameron Hicks and Kasey Meyer qualified and competed in the 2008 NCAA Championships at West Point, N.Y. Kevin Witbrodt was named to the NRA All-American Second Team.

“I am proud of the effort of the team last season,” Lollar said. “It's not easy to lose your coach just before school starts. Their character, led by seniors Cameron Hicks and Dan Belluzzo, will be the foundation on which we can build future success.”

The hiring of Lollar in the first place was a natural occurrence, knowing the respect he has for the Murray State rifle program and the history it has built. Before becoming interim coach, Lollar was a behind-the-scenes part of the rifle program. Lollar assisted legendary Murray State head coach Elvis Green (1980-1999) in the conduction of home matches and soon became the NCAA Tournament Director when Murray State hosted the NCAA Rifle Championships.

“This is an exciting time for MSU Rifle,” Lollar added. “We have begun renovations to The Pat Spurgin Rifle Range that include the installation of electronic targets, and we're looking to go forward, while always remembering where we came from.”

The MSU Rifle program has produced three NCAA team championships and six individual champions.

Lollar has also been the Head Athletic Trainer at Murray State since 1993 and remains in that position.

A 1981 graduate of Mississippi State University, Lollar is married to the former Liz Weglicki of Paducah. The couple has two children, Maggie and John.
