Evansville designated hitter Andy Pascoe delivered a two-out walk-off double down the right-field line in the bottom of the 11th inning to give the Purple Aces a 6-5 victory over Murray State Tuesday evening at Braun Stadium. The victory was the second for UE over the Thoroughbreds this season, both by the same score.
Andy Smith started the rally as he delivered a two-out single before racing around to score the winning run as Pascoe sliced the ball down the game winner.
The 'Breds (16-23) got on the board in the third inning as Elliot Frey started the inning with a single up the middle. Daniel Miller followed with a slow grounder to third on a hit-and-run that allowed a hustling Frey advance all the way to third. Matt Scheer followed with a hustling RBI-double over the head of the first baseman before scoring on a double into the gap in left center off the bat of Kyle Tiernan.
The Aces (10-34) responded in the home-half of the inning with a two-run double off the bat of Derek Melton and followed it up with an RBI single up the middle off the bat of Sean Loggins.
MSU tied the score in the fifth as they loaded the bases on a walk to Frey, a single through the left side from Miller and a walk to Tiernan before a two-out wild pitch scored Frey from third.
UE answered back in the bottom of the inning as they loaded the bases with one out and pinch hitter Tom Freeman was hit by a pitch.
The 'Breds got the run back in the same fashion in the top of the sixth as they loaded the bases on back-to-back singles from Tyler Owen and Taylor Thieke, and a walk to Matt Hon. With two outs, Miller was grazed on the shoulder by a breaking pitch.
MSU took advantage of an Aces error in the seventh as Wes Cunningham's fly ball to the warning track was dropped for a three-base error. Owen followed by plating the runner with a single to left. The error allowed Cunningham to reach base for the 33rd-straight game.
The game was again tied after eight innings as the Purple Aces got a run as a leadoff hit-by-pitch came around to score on a dropped sacrifice fly to right field.
The 'Breds dodged a major bullet in the bottom of the ninth as UE loaded the bases with one out, but MSU reliever Drew Leeper came in and ended the threat with an inning-ending 4-6-3 double play.
Matthew Page (1-4) earned the victory after allowing one hit over two-thirds of an inning. Leeper (1-1) took the loss after giving up one run on three hits over 2.1 innings.
Owen, and Evansville native, led the 'Breds offense by going 4-for-6 with an RBI and a run scored. Tiernan, Frey and Scheer each added two hits.
The 'Breds return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon as they play host to Southern Illinois. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. at Reagan Field.
