'Breds Complete Doubleheader Sweep Over UT Martin

The Murray State baseball team kept its hopes alive for the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament as they got another strong pitching performance in defeating UT Martin 5-1 in the second game of the doubleheader. The Thoroughbreds also took the first game by the same score.

Daniel Calhoun (5-3) followed up Mike Perconte's complete game with his sixth of the season. Calhoun gave up one run on four hits and four strikeouts over the seven innings.

The 'Breds (19-26, 10-12 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Blake Helm and Wes Cunningham delivered back-to-back one-out singles through the left side to put runners on the corners. Tyler Owen drove in Helm with a fielder's choice to short. Andrew Cella put two on with a single to left center before Elliot Frey beat out a chopper to third and scoring the runner from third with a throwing error to first.

The Skyhawks (10-36, 5-16 OVC) got on the board in the second inning as Wes Patterson delivered a solo home run to left field.

MSU answered right back in the home-half of the inning as Kyle Tiernan reached on a fielder's choice and stole second. Helm advanced the runner with an infield single to third. Both runners came in to score as Cunningham doubled off the top of the wall in left field. Cunningham would advance to third on the throw to the plate and was able to score as the pitcher cut the ball and threw it passed the third baseman.

Calen Sutton (4-2) took the loss as he gave up five runs, three earned, on 10 hits over six innings.

Helm led the offensive charge by collecting three hits, while Cunningham, Cella and Elliot Frey each added two.

The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. at Reagan Field.
