The Murray State baseball team has put itself in a must win situation as the Thoroughbreds dropped a tough 3-2 decision to Austin Peay in the second game of a doubleheader. The 'Breds must now win on Saturday and hope for losses from both Tennessee Tech and Eastern Kentucky to make the OVC Tournament.
The 'Breds (20-30, 11-14 OVC) got on the board in the second as Andrew Cella started the inning with a single through the right side. Elliot Frey would sacrifice Cella to second before Evan Pettit would deliver a two-out RBI single to left center.
MSU tacked on another run in the fifth as Hon started the inning with a single up the middle and went to second on a Pettit single through the right side. After a wild pitch advanced both runners, Zach Noonan delivered a sacrifice fly to left field.
APSU (27-26, 14-11 OVC) finally got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh as they loaded the bases with three singles. Joshua Kempf drove in the first run with a single to left, but Elliot Frey was able to cut down the second runner at the plate for the second out. The momentum did not stay on the side of the 'Breds as J.B. Gilbert followed up with an RBI single of his own to tie the game and send it to extra innings.
The Governors were able to win the game in the eighth as the first two hitters of the inning reached via the walk. Following a strikeout, a hit by pitch loaded the bases before Daniel Baggett delivered the game-winning base hit through the right side.
Daniel Tenholder (4-1) earned the victory after pitching a perfect top of the eighth inning. Matt McGaha (2-2) took the loss after walking both batters he faced and allowing one run.
The two teams will close out the series tomorrow afternoon with a 1 p.m. first pitch.
