Golden Eagles Complete Doubleheader Sweep of 'Breds

Tennessee Tech pushed across three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and held off Murray State as the Golden Eagles completed the doubleheader sweep with a 5-3 victory in the second game of the day at Howell Bush Stadium.

The 'Breds (16-26, 7-12 OVC) used a two-out rally in the first inning to scratch across the first run of the game. Wes Cunningham started the rally by reaching safely in his 36th-straight game by chopping the ball off the plate for an infield single. After a wild pitch advanced the runner, Tyler Owen plated Cunningham with a triple to right field.

The Golden Eagles (31-15-1, 11-9 OVC) tied the game in the bottom of the third as Brandon Crossman singled through the right side and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs, Thomas Nelson delivered an RBI double to left field.

TTU found their swing at the plate again in the fourth as they got and RBI single off the bat of A.J. Kirby-Jones and a two-run double off the wall in center field by Crossman.

MSU got one run back in the fifth as Andrew Cella hit a solo home run to right field, his first of the season.

The Golden Eagles got the run back in the home-half of the inning as Nelson doubled into the corner in right field and scored on Chris King's bunt single to first.

The 'Breds added an unearned run in the sixth as Kyle Tiernan singled to center and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs, Owen singled to center and Tiernan was able to score as the throw to the plate got passed the catcher, after being held at third.

Michael Alcorn (6-3) picked up the victory after allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits over seven innings. . Daniel Calhoun (4-3) took the loss after allowing five runs on 10 hits over six innings.

The 'Breds and Golden Eagles close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
