The Murray State volleyball team saw their winless streak extended to three matches, with a 0-3 (21,-25, 13-25, 20-25) loss to Morehead State at Wetherby Gym.
The Racers (3-15, 3-5 Ohio Valley Conference) were led by Teresa Krog and Mary Cunningham, who all tallied seven kills. Krog, who earned her first start of the season, had a .429 (7k-1e-14ta) attack percentage and Cunningham added a .462 (7k-1e-13ta) clip.
The start of the first set the script for a long match, as the serve toggled back-and-forth for the first 14 points before either team could gain a lead larger than one point. The Eagles (15-5, 8-1 OVC) were the first to garner a two-point lead (10-8), but the Racers quickly tied the set at 10 with a 2-0 run of their own. The toggling on the scoreboard continued for the next four serves before Morehead again gained an advantage with a 3-0 run (15-12). The teams again started a back-and-forth battle over the next 10 servers before the Eagles extended their lead to five points with a 2-0 run (22-17). While the teams traded the final seven serves Morehead claimed the 25-21 win.
The second set opened just like the first, with ties from one to six. The Eagles were again the first team to take the two-point lead required to earn a win at the end of the set, by going on a 5-1 run for an 11-7 advantage. Morehead continued to push the momentum of the match and pulled out to a 10-point lead (21-11), with a 10-4 run that included several blocks. The Eagles kept the control of the match in their favor on way to a 25-13 win.
The third set was again tight at the beginning, but this time the Racers were the first team to take a two-point lead (5-3). Murray State either held on to a lead or allowed Morehead to tie the set, but did not relinquish the advantage until the Eagles started a 5-1 run to take a brief 17-16 lead. The teams then returned to the script that they had set up at the beginning of the match and forced tie scores at 17, 18 and 19 before Morehead gained the critical advantage with a 3-0 run (22-19). The Eagles finished the set and match with a 3-1 run for the 25-20 victory.
The Racers now return to Racer Arena to start the longest home stand of the 2009 season. MSU will host the next four matches, starting with Austin Peay, Friday, Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. The Racers are also scheduled to face Tennessee State (Oct. 17), Tennessee Tech (Oct. 23) and Jacksonville State (Oct. 24 during the stretch).
Notes: Sophomore Teresa Krog earned her first start of the 2009 season and seventh overall…red-shirt freshman Cassy Woolverton saw action in her third match of the season…the Racers struggled blocking for the first match this season, recording just one block in the match…it was the first time since Sep. 13, 2008 that Murray State failed to garner at least two total team blocks.
