The Murray State volleyball team improved to 3-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-20) victory over UT Martin in Racer Arena. The Racers (3-13, 3-3 OVC) had a strong overall match and saw an impressive performance from junior Becca Lamb who tallied a .737 hitting percentage.
Lamb's 15 kills on one error and 19 total attempts, for her .737 attack percentage, was the second-best hitting percentage by an MSU player (15-19 attempts) in school history and the third best with all number of attempts. The Highland, Ill., native also added three block assists and two digs.
“Becca's performance tonight was unreal,” said head coach David Schwepker. “She has just been consistently good and that is what we need out of her.”
The Racers had three players record double-digit kill totals and two add double-digits in the digs column. Besides Lamb, junior Ashley Nenninger and sophomore Kayleah Sauer and freshman Lydia Orf garnered 19 and 10 digs, respectively.
The first set opened with a tight fight for control of the scoreboard. The Skyhawks (6-9, 1-5 OVC) earned an early 5-2 advantage, but saw that lead quickly shrink to just one point (5-4). MSU then rallied to tie the set at nine, which marked the first of five tie scores in the next five points. Sophomore Mary Cunningham. MSU also had a strong night hitting, with a season-best .356 (51k-9e-118ta) attack percentage.
The Racers will now have the weekend off before hosting non-conference opponent Lipscomb, Tuesday, Oct. 6 in Racer Arena at 7 p.m. MSU will return to OVC action the following weekend, with away matches at Eastern Kentucky (Oct. 9) and Morehead State (Oct. 10).
Notes: Setter Jade Guo made it three straight matches with at least a double-double when she tallied 36 assists and 10 kills…Guo also added a .529 attack percentage, eight digs and four blocks…junior Sara Hayden added four more blocks to her career total and moved up to seventh on the MSU Block Assist Charts with 136…senior Kelli Johnson returned to the team and saw action in her first match.
Quotes
Head Coach David Schwepker
“We changed our defense up this week by adding Kelli Johnson. That allowed some of the players who had been forced to play defense focus just on offense and that helped stabilize the team.”
“I think that as we stabilize the defense you will see that the team is not under as much pressure. And the big difference tonight was that when we were under pressure we didn't allow UT Martin to get on too much of a run.”
Junior Becca Lamb
“I am really excited about what I was able to do tonight and I just hope that I can continue to play this well.”
“We had a lot more confidence tonight as a team. We knew that we needed this win to pump us up and I think that it really showed on the court.”
