The Murray State volleyball team will have a full weekend of action when they host Tennessee Tech, Friday, Oct. 23 at 7 p.m. and Jacksonville State, Saturday, Oct. 24 at 2 p.m. in Racer Arena. The weekend is also the Racers annual Swinging To Eliminate Cancer fund raising weekend.
Scouting Tennessee Tech
The Golden Eagles head into this Friday's match-up on a five match winning streak that dates back to Oct. 3. The streak has improved their record to 8-12 overall and 7-4 in the Ohio Valley Conference standings.
TTU has two main offensive players that attempt 54 percent of the teams attacks. Leah Meffert has made 879 swings, while Amanda Lindgren has attempted 720 kills. Meffert leads the team with 297 kills and Lindgren has picked up 226. However Marie Peddicord has the best hitting percentage on the team, with a .260 (153k-48e-404ta) mark. Meffert is an all-around player, with 21 service aces, 218 digs and 31 (9-22) total blocks.
As a team, the Golden Eagles have a .190 hitting percentage and trail their opponents in all statistical categories, except digs/set where they are even at 15.9 digs/set.
Scouting Jacksonville State
The Gamecocks are not only at the top of the OVC standings, they are currently undefeated against league opponents at 11-0. JSU heads into the weekend with a 12 match winning streak and will face UT Martin Friday night before coming to Murray.
The Gamecocks have four players who have registered over 200 kills on the season. Brittney Whitten leads the way with 293 and has taken 907 swings so far this year. Whitten is also second on the team in service aces (27) and digs (332). Kara Slater is at the top of the JSU charts for hitting percentage this season, with a.264 (215k-90e-474ta) mark. She is also the team's leading blocker with 45 (4-41).
The Gamecocks lead their opponents in every statistical category except blocking. JSU has sent down 1.3 blocks/set this year, but its opponents have combined for a 2.3 blocks/set rate.
Swinging To Eliminate Cancer
For the second straight season the Racers will be hosting Swinging To Eliminate Cancer, a fund raiser to help those effected by cancer. But this season the team will be raising money to help closer to home, as all the funds raised will go to Ashley's Angels, a donation account set up to help the Gesler Family of Murray, Ky.
Ashley Gesler, the wife of David Gesler an Associate Professor in the Department of Organizational Communication at Murray State, was diagnosed with cancer in April of 2009. The couple has four children.
Donations will be accepted through the weekend and can be given to any member of the team or volleyball staff. Those wishing to make donations can make a flat donation or can choose to make a donation per attack attempt recorded by both teams in both matches over the weekend.
The Racers returned to The Big Apple Café for a rebate night, Monday, Oct. 19. Patrons of The Big Apple Café chose to donate a portion of their check to the cause. The volleyball team was also on hand to help staff and communicate the importance of the event to customers. This year The Big Apple Cafe made a $100 donation to the fund raiser from the rebate night. The Racers also got donations from patrons in the amount of $205 during the night.
Sauer Digs Up OVC Honors
Kayleah Sauer earned her first OVC Defensive Player of the Week honor for the 2009 campaign. The award is the fourth overall for Sauer, after she claimed the final three of the 2008 season.
Sauer tallied a total of 50 digs in the Racers (5-15, 5-5 OVC) key victories over Austin Peay and Tennessee State last weekend. The Louisville, Ky., native finished the match against the Lady Govs one dig shy of the 30 mark in the four-set victory for the Racers. She also added 21 digs in the sweep of the Lady Tigers. Sauer had a strong weekend at the service line as well; recording a career-high three service aces against TSU and adding two more against APSU.
Block Party
Junior Sara Hayden has been making moves on the MSU career blocking charts this season. The Louisville, Ky., native has 184 total blocks, including 142 block assists and 42 block solos.
Her 184 total blocks moved her up to the No. 9 spot on the Racer Total Blocks list. She needs five more to move into eighth, currently held by Holly Jansen (188). Hayden is also on the career Block Assists List in the No. 7 position. She needs 11 to move up to sixth (153 - Katie Kemezys). Hayden is also four block solos away from making the top ten for block solos (46).
Ashley Nenninger is also inching closer to a spot on the block assist and total blocks charts after recording 115 (20-95) total blocks.
Becca Lamb also has a chance to make the total blocks and block assists charts. She currently has 125 (24-101) total blocks.
