The Murray State volleyball team lost its last regular-season game of the 2009 season, 0-3 (14-25, 25-27, 25-20) to Austin Peay in the Dunn Center. The Racers (12-17, 11-7 OVC) head to the 2009 Ohio Valley Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed and could play one of three schools depending on the results of the rest of the OVC matches this weekend. The loss snapped a six-match winning streak that MSU started Oct. 30 against Southeast Missouri State.
The Racers has two players record double-digit kill totals and two more tally more than 10 digs each. Sophomore Ashley Nenninger added 10 kills for MSU. Sophomore Kayleah Sauer led the team with 15 digs, while freshman Lydia Orf added 12.
The opening set started out slow with both teams trading the first four points. The Lady Govs then used a 3-0 run to take the final lead of the set. The Racers kept fighting, but could not cut the deficit to less than three points and trailed by as many as 11 in the 25-14.
The second set was a tight battle, with APSU taking and early three-point advantage only to see it erased by MSU when they tied the set at 11. The battle then really began with the teams forcing ties at every point from 11 to 18 before the Racers took their first lead of the match with a 3-1 run to go up 20-18. The Lady Govs then fought back to tie the set at 21, with a 3-1 run of their own. The teams then traded the next eight points to force extra points. Both teams traded chances to earn the win, but it was on the second attempt by APSU that the match ended, with the Lady Govs winning 27-25.
The third set again saw the scoreboard toggling back-and-forth at the start. APSU was again the first team to take a lead larger than one, when they went up 13-9. The Racers didn't give up and cut the lead to one (14-13), with a 4-1 run, but the Lady Govs then went on a 3-0 run to push their lead out to 17-13. That was all that APSU needed as they earned the sweep with a 25-20 win in the third set.
The Racers might have lost the match, but they held advantages in hitting percentage, digs and blocks. MSU hit .286 (39k-11e-98ta) to APSU's .277 (47k-14e-119ta). The Racers also out-dug the Lady Govs 50-43 and recorded two more blocks (6-4). The key to the APSU win was at the service line where the team combined for 15 service aces and did not allow MSU to record any.
The Racers now prepare for the 2009 OVC Tournament, Nov. 19-21 at No. 1 seed Jacksonville State. The parings and match times will be announced later next week, but MSU will play its first match of the tournament Thursday, Nov. 19.
