Jonathan Craycraft and Elliot Frey each delivered a single, double and triple in pacing a 14-hit Murray State attack as the ?Breds handing St. Louis a 12-5 defeat Saturday afternoon at the Billiken Sports Complex.
The ?Breds (12-3) wasted no time in getting on the board as Kyle Tiernan beat out an infield single and Wes Cunningham followed with a base hit through the right side. Daniel Hill plated both runners with a double inside the right-field line. Zach Noonan pushed across the third run with a groundout to short.
The Billikens (9-6) got an unearned run in the bottom of the inning after a catcher's interference call erased the final out of the inning. Zach Miller followed by delivering an RBI single up the middle.
MSU put another crooked number on the board in the fourth as Noonan walked and Craycraft followed with a base hit. After a Daniel Miller sacrifice bunt, Frey walked to load the bases before Tiernan followed with an RBI base on balls. Cunningham followed with a two-run double to left and Hill pushed across the fourth run with a groundout to short.
The ?Breds rudely greeted the first Billiken reliever in the fifth as Jason Laws and Noonan singled to start the inning. Craycraft followed with a two-run double up the middle that ricochetted off the glove of the second baseman. Frey would plate Craycraft with a double down the line in left field.
SLU got back-to-back doubles in the fifth to push across one run and later got a run-scoring single up the middle from Miller.
MSU quickly responded with two more runs in the sixth as Tyler Owen and Noonan singled ahead of Craycraft's two-run triple to left center.
The Billikens were able to scratch across single runs in the sixth and ninth innings to reach the final score.
Daniel Calhoun (4-0) picked up the victory after allowing two earned runs over six innings. Dave Sever (2-2) took the loss after giving up seven runs on six hits and four walks over four innings. Anthony Stacy (1) picked up the three-inning save. Each of his first six outs were recorded via the strikeout.
Cunningham and Noonan added a pair of hits, with Hill and Craycraft each driving in three.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m.
