Murray State got a two-run home run from Daniel Hill in the first inning and another from Bryan Propst in the seventh as the ?Breds pulled away late in an 11-5 victory over Arkansas State Wednesday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The ?Breds (6-2) used the long ball in the first inning as Kyle Tiernan was hit by a pitch and scored on Hill's two-run shot to left center.
The Red Wolves (2-5) plated three runs in the top of the second Brandon Eller doubled and scored on Derrick Coleman's triple to straight-away center field. Lawson Hipps followed with a run-producing single up the middle. The third of the inning scored when the throw to second on a stolen-base attempt found its way into center field.
MSU took advantage of some wildness in the second inning as Daniel Miller and Elliot Frey walked to start the frame. Tiernan beat out a bunt to load the bases and Wes Cunningham drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Hill drove in another run with a single through left side and Tyler Owen pushed across the third run of the inning with a sacrifice fly to right field.
The Red Wolves got within one run in the fifth as Josh DeMoney tripled off the top of the wall in right field and scored on Guy Brown's sacrifice fly to right field.
The ?Breds added some insurance in the seventh as Propst deposited his first career home run over the fence in left center scoring Jason Laws who drew a walk. Jonathan Craycraft followed with a hustling double to left field. Miller sacrificed the runner to third before scoring on a wild pitch.
ASU used a two-out rally to plate a run in the eighth. After a hit-by-pitch and a double put two runners on, Jordan Kimball singled into the hole at short to score a run.
MSU got that run back, plus two more, in the eighth Hill singled to center with one out and went to second on a wild pitch. Laws drove in the runner with a single to left center. Propst followed with a single to left center before going to third as Laws scored from second on a wild pitch. Craycraft plated the third run with a single down the right-field line.
Dan Huff (2-0) picked up the victory after allowing four runs, three earned, on seven hits over six innings. Drew Benes (0-2) took the loss after giving up four runs on two hits and two walks in one-plus inning.
Hill led the ?Breds offense by going 3-for-5 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Tiernan, Laws, Propst and Craycraft each added two hits.
