Jonathan Craycraft's single to left center with two outs in the bottom
of the sixth inning gave Murray State their first advantage of the game
as the 'Breds put three runs on the board in the inning to defeat
Southeast Missouri 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader Saturday
afternoon at Reagan Field.
After failing to score with runners in scoring position earlier in the game, the 'Breds (20-12, 3-4 OVC) finally capitalized in the sixth. Elliot Frey and Daniel Hill started the frame with back-to-back singles through the left side. SEMO looked to have the runner picked off at second, but the throw was on the right field side of the bag and skipped into right field, advancing both runners.
Jason Laws tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left field before Craycraft gave the 'Breds the lead for good with the single to left center. Craycraft smartly took second on the throw home and scored when Daniel Miller singled to right center.
The Redhawks (18-13, 8-3 OVC) got on the board in the second as Matt Wagner drew a leadoff walk and was sacrificed to second. Tyrelle Cummings plated the run with a single to right center.
The three runs was more than enough for MSU ace Daniel Calhoun (7-1) as he limited the Redhawks to just one run on two hits with six strikeouts in the complete-game effort. Todd Strahlendorf (1-1) took the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
