MSU Advances To OVC Women's Tennis Semifinals

The Murray State Women's Tennis team advanced in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament Friday with a 4-0 victory over Eastern Illinois at the Larry Heflin/Long Oak Tennis Center in Paducah, Ky.

MSU took the doubles point when Angela McGahee and Anne Pennington defeated the EIU pair of Cara Huck and Hayley Homburg 8-3. EIU didn't have a third doubles team and MSU won the point to get the best two of three.

The Racers started the singles portion of the match with a victory at the sixth position when EIU did not have a player for the match.

MSU won the deciding points when Angela McGahee coupled a 6-2, 6-2 win over EIU's Hayley Homburg, with a 6-1, 6-2 win for Alexis Webb over Shannon Brooks.

““Our doubles played amazing, and got is off to an explosive start,” MSU Head Coach Connie Keasling said. “We were able to sustain that momentum when we got into singles play.”

The Racers advance to take on second seed UT Martin in Saturday's 2 p.m. semifinal match.

Fourth seed Jacksonville State won their first round match 5-0 over fifth seed Tennessee Tech. The Gamecocks will take on first seed Eastern Kentucky in the other Saturday semifinal which will also begin at 10 a.m.
