Murray State got back-to-back home runs from Wes Cunningham and Daniel Hill in the top of the first, and a solo shot from Zach Noonan in the fifth to power the 'Breds to an 8-1 victory over Eastern Kentucky in the second game of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon in Richmond. The victory completed the doubleheader sweep of the Colonels, marking the second-straight season the 'Breds have swept the doubleheader in Richmond.
The first inning offense was more than enough for left hander Daniel Calhoun as he allowed one run on five hits and four strikeouts in tossing his seventh complete game of the season. It is his sixth outing, third straight, of allowing one earned run or less.
The 'Breds (22-15, 5-5 OVC) used the long ball in the first inning to jump out to a three-run lead. Elliot Frey was plunked by a pitch with one out and scored on Wes Cunningham's bomb to right center. Daniel Hill followed three pitches later with his 10th round tripper of the season to right center.
MSU again rallied with one out in the second as Zach Noonan was hit by a pit and Frey singled up the middle. Cunningham drove in Noonan with a double off the fence center field and Hill followed with a sacrifice fly to left field. Jason Laws drove in the third run of the inning with a single to center.
The 'Breds added another run in the third as Tyler Owen doubled to right center, Daniel Miller walked and Kyle Tiernan had a bunt base hit. Noonan drove in a run with an infield single that bounced off the glove of the pitcher.
MSU added another run in the fifth as Noonan delivered a solo home run center, his second of the season.
The Colonels (19-16, 6-8 OVC) got on the board in the sixth as Matt Davis singled through the left side and came around to score on a wild pitch with two outs.
Jim Clancy (3-3) took the loss after allowing seven runs on eight hits in two-plus innings.
Cunningham led the offense by going 3-for-4 with three RBIs. Noonan, Laws and Owen each added two hits.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 12 p.m. central.
