The Racers had a lead, but couldn't secure the doubles point.
MSU's No. 3 doubles team of Lynsey Bochenek and Cassidy Cunitz scored an 8-4 win, but Lyndsay Ottosen and Alexis Webb at No. 2 dropped their match 8-6.
That left the No. 1 team of Angela McGahee and Anne Pennington to battle for the deciding match for the doubles point.
MaGahee served for the match up 7-6 and had two match point tries, but couldn't get the clincher. EKU broke her serve to tie it at 7-7 and eventually went on to a 9-7 win putting the Colonels ahead 1-0.
The Colonels closed out the 4-0 final with wins at the No. 1, 3, and 5 singles positions.
MSU Head Coach Connie Keasling pointed to the close loss in doubles as a punch the Racers never recovered from.
“In athletics it's all about momentum and when we couldn't get the doubles point and expended so much energy, it took a lot out of us,” Keasling said. “It took us the whole first set in singles to somewhat recover from that.”
Keasling takes solace in the fact that her squad played its best tennis at the right time.
“We really came together and played our best tennis of the season at the end,” Keasling said. “Our doubles play was just incredible and it was our energy, everything else fed off of it. Our team has an exciting future ahead of us.”
The Racers finished the season at 14-8.
