Elliot Frey set a new Murray State record as he went 6-for-6 with a
double, home run and three RBIs as Murray State rallied from a pair of
three-run deficits in the first five innings and scored the final eight
runs of the game in a 13-8 victory over Morehead State in the first
game of a doubleheader at Allen Field.
Frey started his day with singles in the first, third and fifth, before doubling in the sixth, homering in the eighth and capping it off with a single up the middle in the ninth.
Frey was not the only 'Bred to have a career day as Jason Laws went 2-for-4 with a triple, home run and career-best six RBIs.
The 'Breds (24-15, 6-5 OVC) got on the board in the first inning as Zach Noonan hit an opposite field shot, his third on the season, on the third pitch of the game. It was the first leadoff home run for MSU since Austin Swain homered to right field on the fifth pitch of the game against Freed-Hardeman on April 18, 2007. It was also the first leadoff home run in an OVC contest since Chaz Ebert homered to center field on a 3-2 pitch at Morehead on April 17, 2005.
The Eagles (14-23, 7-8 OVC) wasted no time in pushing three runs across as Drew Lee followed a passed ball with an RBI single to center field, just ahead of a two-run home run to left center by Michael Bottoms.
MOR added two more runs in the second as Travis Redmond and Daniel Pugh hit solo short-porch home runs to right center and center, respectively.
MUR battled to tie the game in the third as Noonan started the inning with a triple to left center and scored on Frey's single to right field. Daniel Hill drew a one-out base on balls and Laws made the Eagles pay with a three-run shot to right center, the second-straight game Laws has homered to right center.
The bottom-half of the inning was not favorable to the 'Breds as the Eagles got two runners on a wild pitch on a strikeout and an infield single ahead of Luke Bainer's three-run homer to center.
The 'Breds again battled to tie the score in the fifth as Frey singled to left field and Hill was hit by a pitch. Laws drove in both runners with a triple to left center and scored on Jonathan Craycraft's groundout to short.
MUR gained their first advantage since the first inning when they pushed across two runs in the sixth. With one on and two outs, Frey plated a runner from second with a double down the left-field line. Wes Cunningham followed with an infield single and Hill was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Laws plated his sixth RBI of the game with a base on balls.
The 'Breds stretched the advantage to five runs in the eighth as Frey started things with a home run to center field. After Cunningham was hit by a pitch, Hill hit his 12th home run of the season to right field.
Chris Craycraft (7-2) gutted out the victory as he gave up eight runs on 10 htis and seven strikeouts in seven innings. He allowed just one hit and no runs over the final four innings. Quentin Morgan (2-3) took the loss after allowing nine runs on nine hits in five-plus innings.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader 30 minutes after the completion of the first game.
