Wes Cunningham delivered a two-run home run in the first inning as
Chris Craycraft did the rest as he tossed his second-straight complete
game as Murray State defeated Austin Peay 4-2 in the first game of a
doubleheader Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Craycraft (10-2) allowed two runs on nine hits and three strikeouts, without walking a hitter for the second-straight start. The 10th victory of the season matches teammate Daniel Calhoun and the duo are the only two teammates in Division I baseball with double-digit victories.
The 'Breds (31-18-1, 12-7-1 OVC) got going in the first inning as Elliot Frey reached on a single and scored when Cunningham hit the first pitch he saw over the fence in left field, his ninth on the season.
APSU (21-29, 6-11 OVC) got a run back in the third as Chris Lewellyn singled up the middle and went to second on a wild pitch. Jared DeLong drove in the runner with a double to right center with two outs.
MSU got the run back in the home-half of the inning as Frey walked and went to third on Cunningham's double down the right-field line. Daniel Hill drove in the run from third with a groundout to short.
The Govs put together a two-out rally in the fourth as Matt Kole doubled to left center and scored when Haskell Fink blooped a double down the right-field line, just in front of a diving Hill.
The 'Breds got an insurance run in the seventh as Kyle Tiernan singled up the middle and went to second on an error on a bunt attempt. Frey moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt and Cunningham was intentionally walked to load the bases. Hill pushed across a run by drawing a bases loaded walk. APSU got the next two hitters to minimize the damage in the inning.
Ricky Marshall (4-3) took the loss after giving up three runs on seven hits over six innings.
The two teams play the second game of the doubleheader 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
