Murray State committed three errors that led to five unearned runs and that proved to be the difference as the 'Breds could not complete a furious comeback in falling 7-5 in the second game of a doubleheader Friday afternoon at Reagan Field.
The Govs (22-29, 7-11 OVC) got on the board in the third as Daniel Baggett hit a solo home run to left field. Michael Blanchard beat out an infield single and went to second on a passed ball before scoring on Jon Clinard's double just inside the bag at first. The third run of the inning scored on a misplayed ball in right before Trey Lucas singled up the middle to plate the fourth run.
APSU stretched its lead in the fourth as a pair of errors helped to push across three more unearned runs. Baggett plated the first run with a double to right center before scoring when he stole third and the ball bounced into left field. After a dropped pop up extended the inning, Adam Browett delivered an RBI double to left center.
The 'Breds (31-19-1, 12-8-1 OVC) finally got on the board in the sixth as Elliot Frey walked and went to third as Wes Cunningham doubled off the fence in right center. Daniel Hill drove in both runners with a single up the middle.
MSU made the game interesting in the seventh as pushed across three runs and had the winning run at the plate. With one out, Kyle Tiernan singled through the right side. Cunningham drew a two-out walk and Hill was hit by a pitch. After a passed ball scored one run, Jason Laws and Jonathan Craycraft delivered back-to-back RBI singles to send the wining run to the plate. Daniel Tenholder came on to pick up his ninth save of the season as he enduced a popup to end the game.
Daniel Calhoun (10-3) took the loss as he gave up seven runs, two earned, on eight hits and four strikeouts over seven innings. It was his 10th complete game of season, tieing the single-season record set by Kurt Umbarger in 1998.
Ryne Harper (4-3) earned the victory after allowing two runs on six hits over six innings. He walked three and struck out five.
Craycraft led the offense with three hits, while Hill drove in two runs to raise his school-record total to 66.
The two teams close out the three-game series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
