Junior left hander Daniel Calhoun continued his mastery on the mound as
he tossed his league-leading eighth complete game in Murray State's 4-1
victory over Tennessee Tech in the second game of a doubleheader
Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field. The 'Breds took the first game
10-7 to secure their fourth-straight Ohio Valley Conference series.
Calhoun (10-1) allowed just one run on five hits and nine strikeouts over his seven innings. He now has 74 strikeouts and six walks in 75 innings on the season.
The Golden Eagles (22-20, 7-11 OVC) looked to get on the board in the second inning as Evan Webb singled and Cory Wright ripped a double into the corner in left field. As Webb rounded third, Tyler Owen took the relay throw from Elliot Frey and threw a strike to Daniel Miller who blocked the plate and tagged the runner to end the inning.
The 'Breds (28-16, 9-6 OVC) finally cracked the scoreboard in the fourth as Jason Laws started the frame with a single to center field. Jonathan Craycraft followed with a sacrifice bunt back to the pitcher that was thrown down the first-base line, allowing Laws to score and Craycraft to go to second. Owen followed with an RBI single to center field.
MSU added to its lead in the fifth as Frey was hit by a pitch for the 11th time this season and advanced to third on Wes Cunningham's double to left field. Daniel Hill drove in his school-record tieing 57th run with a sacrifice fly to right center and Laws followed with a sacrifice fly to center field. Hill tied the record set by Brett McCutchan in 2001.
TTU got their lone run in the seventh as A.J. Kirby-Jones hit a solo home run to left center.
Lee Henry (6-2) took the loss after allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits over six innings.
The two teams will attempt to play the final game of the series tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.
