Murray State sophomore Elliot Frey supplied the final shot in the
'Breds thrilling come-from-behind victory as he delivered a walk-off
two-run single to right field in eliminating regular-season champion
Eastern Illinois with a 5-4 victory Friday afternoon at the Ohio Valley
Conference Tournament at Brooks Stadium in Paducah.
MSU started the rally with Daniel Miller taking a full-count pitch high. With one out, Kyle Tiernan singled to right center to put runners on the corners. Zach Noonan drew a walk to load the bases before Frey sent the home dugout into a frenzy with a two-run single to right field.
MSU head coach Rob McDonald put up the stop sign to hold Tiernan at third, but the junior shortstop just put his head down and slid head first with the winning run. When asked after the game if he ever thought of stopping, Tiernan just smiled and said "no way."
The Panthers (36-14) got on the board in the third inning as a hit by pitch and an infield single put runners on the corners with two outs. The first run scored on a wild pitch before Richie Derbak plated the second run with a soft single into right field.
EIU added to its lead in the fourth as Zach Borenstein walked to start the inning and went to second on a sacrifice bunt. Brett Nommensen drove in the runner from second with a single through the right side.
The 'Breds (34-20-1) got two runs back in the fourth as Frey drew a leadoff walk and went to third on Daniel Hill's one-out double down the left-field line. Bryan Propst drove in a run with a single through the left side and Tyler Owen followed with a single into right center.
MSU tied the game in the sixth as Hill hit the first pitch of the inning well over the wall in left center. The solo shot was the 16th of the season for Hill, tieing the school record set by Clay Boone (1981) and Gary Blaine (1984).
The Panthers regained the lead in the seventh as Nommensen doubled to right center and later scored on Zach Skimore's single to center.
Anthony Stacy (2-2) picked up the victory in relief as he allowed just one hit in his two innings. Marc Harmon started the game for the 'Breds and allowed four runs on eight hits over seven innings.
Derbak (7-2) took the loss for the Panthers as he gave up one run on two hits and a walk in one-third of an inning. EIU starter Tyler Kehrer allowed four runs on five hits over eight innings. He struck out 10, but walked five, including the game-tying run in the bottom of the ninth.
Hill led the offense by going 3-for-4 with a double and a home run. Frey finished the game 1-for-3 with a walk and the two game-winning RBIs.
The 'Breds return to the diamond tomorrow at noon as they take on the loser of the Jacksvonville State-Tennesse Tech game.
