The Murray State volleyball team battled not only Jacksonville State, but also hot and humid gym conditions in the team's 1-3 (14-25, 24-26, 25-19, 22-25) loss to the Gamecocks in Pete Mathews Coliseum.
The Racers (2-11, 2-2 OVC) were led by junior Becca Lamb. The Highland, Ill., native continued to perform strong for MSU, with a .371 (15k-2e-35ta) hitting percentage. Sophomore Sara Hayden had a hand in each of MSU's three blocks. The Racers also stepped up their offense by hitting .452 on 16 kills, only two errors and 31 total attempts. Lamb was a large reason for the increase, garnering a .667 (6k-0e-9ta) during the set. No member of the team hit below .333, with setter Jade Guo hitting a set-best .750 (3k-0e-4ta).
MSU opened the fourth set by taking a quick 4-1 advantage, but quickly saw the lead disappear as the Gamecocks went up 8-5. JSU kept the lead around three points before pushing the lead to as many as eight points (11-19). The Racers did not give up and cut the deficit to three points (23-20) late in the set, with a 4-1 run. MSU then held off two set points, but a kill off the block by JSU's Alyx Schulte ended the match.
The Gamecocks earned key advantages at the service line, with nine service aces to the Racers four. MSU earned a clear advantage of its own by out-blocking JSU 7.0 to 1.0.
The Racers will now head to Cookeville, Tenn., to take on Tennessee Tech, Saturday, Sep. 26 at 2 p.m. in the Eblen Center. The Golden Eagles are coming off their first win of the OVC season today after defeating UT Martin 3-0. TTU is now 2-11 overall and 1-3 in the Ohio Valley Conference.
Notes: Sara Hayden moved just four block assists from the No. 9 spot on the Racers All-Time Block Assist list with her four during the match.
