The Murray State softball team continued its great start to the 2010 fall season Sunday afternoon with a pair of 10-1 and 12-1 victories over John A. Logan at Racer Field.
The Racers scored the first runs of the opener in the bottom of the first inning as Ellyn Troup singled into left field with runners on first and second to score Ali Hart. Stephanie Mattocks followed in the next at-bat with a single through the left side of the infield into left to score two and put MSU ahead 3-0 after one.
They added solo runs in each of the third, fourth, and fifth innings, highlighted by Mattocks' home run to left field with one out in the bottom of the fifth.
Murray State broke through again in the sixth inning with a pair of two-run homers to center field from Hart and Jenna Bradley to cap off the nine run victory.
Shelby Kosmecki struck out five without allowing a hit in pitching the first three innings of the game. Madysen Wilton allowed two hits and a run in three innings with Leslie Bridges striking out two and walking one in her lone inning of action in the circle.
The Racers were just as dominant in the nightcap, scoring multiple runs in each of the four innings they batted in. Troup again drove in the game's first run with a single to center that scored Megan Glosser. Mattocks brought in Troup from second on a single to right to put MSU up 2-0.
Bridges singled to right in the second inning to score Lauren Buch after she walked to open the bottom of the second. Bridges came in to score later in the inning on a fielder's choice from Hart.
The Racers scored four runs in each of the third and fourth innings with a solo shot from Troup to lead off the third and a two run blast from Bradley with nobody out in the fourth.
Kristen Broadway pitched the first four innings for MSU, striking out five while allowing five hits and one run. She pitched out of trouble in the first with an inning-ending strikeout as the Volunteers threatened with runners on second and third with one out. Chelsey Sullivan gave up a pair of two-out hits in the fifth but got out of the inning without allowing a run with a groundout to third.
Nine Racers recorded hits on the day, led by Mattocks with five and Troup, Glosser and Hart with four each. Glosser scored five times from the second spot in the batting order while Mattocks and Bradley led the team with four runs batted in each.
We've been focusing on some different things this week in practice; our energy level, our focus, how we supported each other as teammates and I was really pleased with what I saw from that,” head coach Jay Pyron said. “We seemed to get stronger every inning and we hit the ball solid today. We had a lot of good hitting performances today and lot of people that might normally not get a high number of at-bats really hit the ball well when they got the opportunity. I'm really happy with how they played and not just on the field but with how well they supported their teammates.
Murray State closes out its 2010 fall season Oct. 16 with a doubleheader against Mid-Continent. First pitch at Racer Field is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
