LADY RED WOLF CLASSIC RESULTS
Murray State freshman women's golfer Alex Lennartsson came home with her first victory as a collegian Tuesday and the Racers finished only one shot off the lead at the Lady Red Wolfe Classic in Jonesboro, Ark., at Sage Meadows CC.
Lennartsson, from Nykoping, Sweden, topped the field of 47 players with rounds of 76-70-73=219. Her 2-under-par 70 was the lowest in her fledgling MSU career.
“I had a rough start, but I played the final nine holes two under,” Lennartsson said. “The 70 was the low round of my career and that was exciting, but our whole team is coming together and it's satisfying to see us improve.”
The Racers also made more strides in the fall with a second-place finish, one thin stroke behind host Arkansas State 911-912. MSU, which had scores of 315-296-301=912, nearly overcame a nine-shot deficit in the final 18 holes. ASU recorded rounds of 298-304-309=911.
The Racers got a pair of fourth-place finishes from Delaney Howson and Caroline Lagerborg. Howson, also a freshman, had scores of 77-76-75=228, while Lagerborg, a senior, finished 78-73-77=228. Morgan Cross finished 13th with scores of 84-77-76=237, while Alli Weaver fired rounds of 86-86-83=255 for a spot in 25th place.
Jilian Brake played the event as an individual and finished 22nd after scores of 91-81-79=251.
Racer Head Coach Velvet Milkman, whose program will be looking for a third straight Ohio Valley Conference title in the spring, was happy to see what is a rebuilt team show more improvement.
“The first round is still giving us some problems, but we're closing the gap on that,” she said. “Our team continues to gain confidence and they're starting to see that they can play and play well.”
South Alabama finished third at 931, while Hardin (969), Tennessee Tech (977) and St. Francis (NY) (1175) rounded out the field.
The Sage Meadows course played to a par of 72 and 6,141 yards.
MSU's next event is Oct. 18-19 at the Austin Peay Invitational at Clarksville CC, in Clarksville, Tenn.
