The Racers (11-13, 7-6 OVC) were led by junior Mary Cunningham who tallied a career-high 13 kills and had a .545 (13k-1e-22ta) hitting percentage. Senior Sara Hayden added a .588 (10k-0e-17ta) attack percentage and three block assists. Fellow seniors Becca Lamb and Ashley Nenninger added 14 and 12 kills respectively.
Junior Jade Guo tallied her seventh double-double of the season with a season-high 53 assists and 17 digs. Junior Kayleah Sauer led the team defensively with 24 digs, while sophomore Lydia Orf added 11.
The first set was a battle for control as both teams would take a small lead and then see it disappear. The teams combined for 13 tie scores before someone was able to break the stalemate. The Redhawks were the team to earn the advantage, with a 6-0 run that put them up 18-23 before they closed out the set with a 19-25 win.
The second set started just like the first, with the teams trading the first eight serves of the match before a lead was gained. This time it was the Racers who earned the advantage, with a 2-0 run and they didn't look back. MSU added to their lead with several runs over the course of the set, including 4-0 and 5-0 runs. The Racers built their lead to 10 (23-13), but SEMO was not done fighting and with MSU sitting at set-point the Redhawks went on a 5-0 run before Hayden ended the match with a kill from the middle of the court (25-19).
Both teams fought for control again at the start of set three, with the final tie of the set coming at eight-all. The Racers then went on an 11-4 run that gave them control for good and built their lead to 19-12. SEMO made a final run of three points after MSU had reached 22, but it was not enough as the Racers earned the 25-18 win.
MSU earned a quick 4-1 lead in the fourth set, before seeing SEMO erase that lead and take a 5-4 advantage, with a 4-0 run. The teams then returned to the all-familiar back-and-forth battle for the rest of the set. The teams traded small runs throughout the span before either team was able to earn the two-point advantage needed to win the set. The Racers were down 24-25 and facing the possibility of a fifth set when a block solo by Guo started a 3-0 run to earn the 27-25 victory.
MSU tallied a .287 (63k-17e-160ta) team hitting percentage, while the Redhawks garnered a .220 (53k-18e-159ta) mark. MSU also earned an advantage in digs, 76-71, against a SEMO team that is ranked No. 2 in the nation in digs per set.
The Racers will finish their short road trip this week with a stop in Edwardsville, Ill., Thursday, Oct. 28 to face SIU Edwardsville at 5:30 p.m.
