The Murray State women's soccer team shut out Austin Peay in a hard-fought game, but were unable to find a goal themselves as neither team was able to score in two overtimes in a 0-0 draw Sunday afternoon at Cutchin Field.
The Racers (2-9-3, 1-2-1 OVC) needed a couple key saves throughout the match to preserve the shutout. Jenelle Cunningham saved a shot from going into a wide open net after goalkeeper Tara Isbell was caught out of position after attempting to control a loose ball in the 52nd minute. Isbell came up big near the end of regulation, deflecting a shot with 58 seconds remaining in the second half to keep the Lady Govs off the scoreboard.
Isbell made eight saves to record her second shutout of the weekend and fifth of the season.
Sophie Hargreaves had three shots and one on-goal to lead the MSU offense. She had the Racers' closest attempt on goal on a ball that ended up above the Austin Peay (9-4-1, 1-2-1 OVC) net.
“It was a hard-fought match by both teams,” head coach Beth Acreman said. “Austin Peay is an improved squad and has some good players. We struggled attacking again today and weren't where I want it to be. As a team our effort was good and we need to keep pushing in our conference games.”
MSU faces a quick turnaround with a mid-week non-conference match at Evansville Oct. 6 at 7:00 p.m. before returning to Cutchin Field Oct. 8 for an OVC contest against Tennessee Tech at 3:00 p.m.
