In the final home game until Dec. 18, the Murray State women's basketball team earned a 76-54 victory over Mid-Continent at the CFSB Center. The Racers (2-0) will now hit the road for seven-straight games.
MSU spread their scoring and rebounding around the 13 players that saw action in the game, with all but two scoring and everyone garnering at least one rebound. Juniors Rachael Isom and Mallory Schwab led the team in scoring, with 13 and 12 points respectively. Sophomore Mariah Robinson led the Racers on the boards, with 10, while red-shirt freshman Jessica Winfrey added seven.
The Racers opened the first half shooting better than they did in the first game of the season, garnering a 40 percent mark in the opening four minutes, and finished the half with a 31.6 (12-of-38) percentage. Both teams started the game with three-pointers in the first minute of the play. MSU took an 8-3 lead within the first three minutes and then saw the lead drop to one point (8-7) over the next 1:19 as Mid-Con went on a 4-0 run.
The Cougars continued the run over the next 2:30 and took a brief 10-12 lead, with a 9-2 run. However, the Racers quickly responded with a three by sophomore Candace Nevels that sparked a 15-0 run for MSU over the next eight minutes. The Racers kept Mid-Con's scoring total low through the rest of the half, allowing just 12 more points to be scored (six in the final 1:30) and went into the locker room with a 37-24 lead.
Mid-Con started the second half by pushing the tempo of the game, but was never able to cut the deficit that they went into the locker room with to less than 13 points. MSU pushed its lead out to 20 within the first six minutes of the half and did not let the lead slip below 18 the rest of the game. The Racers built the lead out to as many as 26 points before earning the 76-54 win.
MSU shot 38.4 percent (28-of-73) from the field and made nine three-pointers in the game, while holding the Cougars to 28.1 percent (18-of-64) from the field. The Racers also earned an advantage in rebounding, 56-42. MSU garnered 22 offensive rebounds and took advantage of them by scoring 27 second-chance points.
The Racers will again have just one days rest before their next competition, as the team travels to Evansville, Ind., to face Evansville, Wednesday, Nov.17 at 5 p.m. at Roberts Stadium.
Notes: After tallying just six three-pointers in the game against St. Catharine, the Racers tallied eight in the first 20 minutes of action…red-shirt freshman Aubrey Minix saw her first action in a MSU uniform…junior Kayla Lowe tallied a career-best three assists in 14 minutes of play.
