Box Score
Murray State scored five runs in the bottom of the first inning and that was more than enough for right hander Chris Craycraft who tossed a complete-game three hitter as the Breds took the series opener, 8-1, over Eastern Kentucky Saturday afternoon at Reagan Field.
Craycraft (6-3) retired the first nine hitters he faced, before giving up a hit to start the fourth. He allowed the next hitter to reach on a single and a leadoff single in the sixth the rest of the game. He walked just one hitter and struck out eight as he needed only 107 pitches.
The Breds (22-21, 9-5 OVC) continued to swing the bats in the first inning as a two-out rally pushed across five runs in the frame. Wes Cunningham started the rally by receiving a five-pitch walk. Bryan Propst advanced to Cunningham to third on a single to right center, before both runners scored on Jason Laws' double into the corner in left field. Colton Moore doubled home Laws and scored on Cory Hodskins' single through the right side. Jonathan Craycraft extended the inning with a single to third, and Elliot Frey closed out the scoring with a run-scoring single up the middle.
The Colonels (22-20, 8-8 OVC) got on the board in the fourth inning as Richie Rodriguez tripled into the gap in the left center and scored on a wild pitch.
MSU pushed across two more runs in the fourth as Frey reached on an error by the second baseman and scored on Brandon Elliott's triple to right center. Cunningham drove in Elliott with a groundout to first.
The Breds added a run in the sixth as Zach Noonan singled through the left side and stole second. Elliott moved Noonan to third with a bunt base hit, and Cunningham drove in Noonan with an infield single into the hole at short.
Paul Duncan (4-3) took the loss after allowing eight runs, six earned, on 14 hits over 5.1 innings.
Moore led the offense by going 3-for-4, while Elliott, Cunningham, Laws and Jonathan Craycraft each collected two hits. Every hitter in the lineup had a hit by the sixth inning.
The two teams will play the second game of the doubleheader approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first game.
